The Indelible imprint of Mrs. Fashu Collier Principal, Methodist Girls' High School [1958-1986]

Mrs. Fashu Collier's legacy at Methodist Girls' High School (MGHS) is truly remarkable. As the longest-serving principal, her dedication to the school and its students created lasting impacts both academically and personally. The fact that she came from a devout Methodist Christian background and was the daughter of Dr. J.G. Cummings, a respected medical doctor, adds depth to her story, showing how service and leadership were central to her life from an early age.

Her early education at MGHS, followed by her transfer to Annie Walsh Memorial School and later higher education in England, shows her commitment to self-improvement and education. This dedication continued when she returned to Freetown to teach and then furthered her training to become a principal. Upon her return, her leadership at MGHS helped to introduce significant reforms, such as the much-needed Commercial Department, which equipped many students for successful careers in secretarial and accounting roles. Her work to diversify the curriculum also helped shape generations of women into leaders across various fields, both in Sierra Leone and abroad.

The lasting affection of students for Mrs. Collier is a testament to her influence. The June 16, 2001, reunion in the U.S. highlights the deep connections she fostered during her tenure. It’s touching to know that alumni, many of whom had not seen her for decades, came together to honor her with gifts and to reminisce about the profound impact she had on their lives.

Her influence remains a key part of the MGHS community, with over 80% of current association members having attended the school during her time as principal.

NY.NJ.CT.MA Alumnae

In November 1906, Mrs. Rosa Corkson saw the need for ‘old girls’ to keep in touch and assist each other in time of need.

Together with six others, they formed the nucleus of the then Wesleyan Girls’ High School (WGHS) Old Girls’ Association. She became its first president and a Mrs. Scotland Dalmas became the first treasurer, a post she held for forty (40) years with distinction.
